If you could pick any (no, seriously, any) literary character and have them show-down with another literary character, Smash Bros-style, who would it be? That’s the premise of a new r/AskReddit thread, posed by u/GayDagger, that has fans picking out foes both farcical and formidable.
Over on the kid’s lit side, we have Clifford vs. The Very Hungry Caterpillar (both excellent choices, one has size, one has endless hunger, whomever wins…HUMANITY LOSES), while our Shakespearean cage match sees both Macbeth (“no man that’s born of woman”) and Mercutio (“A plague o’ both your houses!”) in the ring.
As for sci-fi and fantasy, well, the possibilities are literally endless. So far, users have volunteered Ser Barristan Selmy, Harry Dresden, Mat Cauthon, Rand al’Thor, Nynaeve, Roland Deschain, Gandalf, Glorfindel, Kaladin Stormblessed, Shallan Davar, Paul Atreides, Leto Atreides II, Kvothe, and many, many more. (Makes us pine for the days of Unbound Worlds’ annual sci-fi/fantasy CAGE MATCH!)
